Affiliate marketing can be a great way to add additional revenue streams into your business, without too much additional work. Even better, done right those links will remain on your site far into the future, earning you a percentage long after you took the time to add them. I’m still getting paid from links added to my niche sites back in 2009 when I first set them up.
However, when you are first getting started there are some ways to approach affiliate marketing which will serve you well over the long term. Let’s look at just five of them:
Choose Your Partners Wisely
There are lots of affiliate networks out there and many different companies to work with, you just need to do a little research to find them. Make sure therefore, that you work with businesses who you are happy to recommend and who provide a great experience for the customer. If you buy from those brands yourself, then so much the better.
Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Basket
While it may be tempting to choose an affiliate that sells almost every product – and there’s nothing wrong with doing this – you might also want to widen out your number of partners so that you have income coming from different sources. That way, if one particular business makes any changes you have a more secure spread of income.
Cover Yourself Legally
Make sure that you look through the T&Cs of each of the companies or affiliate networks you work with as each one will differ slightly. Also, ensure you have any relevant affiliate disclaimers on your website or blog.
Write Evergreen Content
The best way to keep your affiliate links viable for as long as possible is to embed them in evergreen content. That is, content which people will want to read now and even years down the line because it will be as relevant then as it it now. This is not always possible as you may be reviewing a product which will be replaced by a newer version after a certain period of time. However, where possible make your content as evergreen as possible. For example, say you have a pet blog and are writing about rabbit care (close to my heart!). Much of this information will remain the same for a very long time, so don’t include any time sensitive aspects to it.
As I said at the start I am still earning income from blog posts written 8 years ago. When you start affiliate marketing will there suddenly be a flood of income immediately? Probably not, unless you happen to choose products which are trending right now and therefore hugely popular. However, affiliate marketing allows you to add small streams of income, which over time and as your website grows, will become much bigger rivers.
